Erik N. Mayer, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, specializing in orthopedic trauma. He provides advanced surgical care for complex musculoskeletal injuries of the extremities, joints, and pelvis, including fractures of the hip, femur, tibia, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, arm, elbow, and wrist. His expertise includes treating acute and chronic fractures, joint dislocations, malunions, non-unions, post-traumatic arthritis of the hip, knee, and shoulder, and complications from polytrauma. Dr. Mayer also performs reconstructive surgery, limb lengthening, limb salvage, and joint replacement for severe injuries and arthritis.
Dr. Mayer earned his undergraduate degree in neuroscience at Brigham Young University, where he was a four-year letterman on the Division I men’s volleyball team. He attended medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. During his final year of residency, he served as administrative chief resident and was awarded the prestigious John Border Memorial Fellowship by AO Trauma North America, training at Kantonsspital Graubünden in Switzerland. He completed an orthopedic trauma fellowship at UTHealth Houston, gaining extensive experience at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, one of the busiest trauma centers in the nation.
Dr. Mayer is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and AO Trauma North America, and is committed to advancing care for patients with traumatic injuries.
Outside work, he enjoys traveling, cycling, skiing, and spending time with his wife and four children.
