Biography

Joanne Y. Zhou, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is a fellowship-trained orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgeon with expertise in hand and microvascular surgery. As an expert hand surgeon, she performs advanced arthroscopic and open procedures for the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Her clinical focus includes highly searched conditions such as hand arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendon injuries, nerve injuries, and complex fractures.

Additionally, her practice focuses on comprehensive care for musculoskeletal injuries affecting the upper extremity. She treats both common and complex conditions from the shoulder to the fingertips. She works closely with each patient to create an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan that supports timely recovery. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may involve nonoperative therapies, minimally invasive joint preservation techniques, joint replacement, or reconstructive hand surgery after complex trauma.

Dr. Zhou’s academic journey began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she earned her undergraduate degree in biology. She completed medical school at Stanford University with a scholarly concentration in bioengineering and stayed to finish her orthopedic surgery residency. Fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at Emory University followed. During the international component of this fellowship, she trained in Wrightington, England, with world leaders in elbow instability, arthroplasty, and arthroscopy.

Her research interests span clinical and biomechanics studies. She has authored scientific articles, received national grant funding, written textbook chapters, and presented her work at major national and international conferences.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, running, traveling, and exploring new restaurants.
