Biography

Candice B. Teunis, MD, is a board-certified hand surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Teunis specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, providing comprehensive care for conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. She sees patients in Sugar Land and surrounding communities, offering convenient access to specialized orthopedic care close to home.

Dr. Teunis’s clinical interests include hand and upper extremity surgery and reconstructive hand microsurgery. Specifically, she treats hand and wrist fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. She also manages cubital tunnel syndrome, nerve compression syndromes, and complex upper-extremity trauma. Furthermore, she cares for both acute injuries and chronic conditions that cause pain, numbness, weakness, or limited motion. Because of her advanced training in reconstructive microsurgery, she performs delicate procedures to repair nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissues. As a result, patients with severe injuries or complex reconstructive needs receive highly specialized care.

Her approach emphasizes precision and evidence-based treatment. Above all, she prioritizes individualized, patient-centered care. Before recommending treatment, she carefully evaluates each patient’s condition and goals. Then, she develops a personalized plan. This plan may include nonoperative care or advanced surgical techniques. Ultimately, her goal is to restore strength, motion, and function. She also helps patients return safely to work, sports, and daily activities.

Dr. Teunis earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. She then attended Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. After medical school, she completed her Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Utah and Affiliated Hospitals. She later pursued a Hand Surgery fellowship at the Hand Center of San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. There, she refined her expertise in advanced hand and upper extremity procedures.
