Dr. James Showery is an orthopedic spine surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He specializes in the comprehensive care of spinal conditions, with clinical expertise in spine trauma, cervical and thoracic myelopathy, adult spinal deformity, revision spinal surgery, lumbar spinal stenosis, spine injuries in athletes, and minimally invasive spine surgery. He also has a strong interest in motion preservation surgery and improving the patient experience throughout the entire continuum of care.
Dr. Showery is committed to using both surgical and nonoperative approaches to help patients return to function and mobility. His practice focuses on personalized treatment strategies incorporating the latest technology and evidence-based care to optimize outcomes, from initial consultation to recovery.
A native of El Paso, Texas, Dr. Showery earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He then completed a fellowship in orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, where he gained advanced training in complex spine procedures and multidisciplinary care.
Dr. Showery is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, AO Spine North America, and the Lumbar Spine Research Society. He actively educates orthopedic residents and regularly contributes to national and international spine research conferences. His academic interests include spinal cord injury, spine biomechanics, perioperative care optimization, and spinal trauma. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and continues to lead ongoing studies in spine surgery innovation.
Dr. Showery sees patients in Bellaire, Texas, and Memorial City at our Memorial Villages office, welcoming individuals from the Greater Houston areas and surrounding communities.
