Hip Preservation Program

Overview

Under the leadership of Director Alfred A. Mansour III, MD, and Co-Director David R. Maldonado, MD, the Comprehensive Hip Preservation Program advances research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of adolescents and adults with complex hip conditions.

Mansour’s research focuses on adolescent and young adult hip preservation, including return to sports after periacetabular osteotomy, perioperative pain management and the use of 3D computer modeling to improve surgical planning. He also studies complex knee preservation in collaboration with Walter R. Lowe, MD. Their work examines knee kinematics after high tibial osteotomy and slope-reducing high tibial osteotomy, as well as the effects of limb alignment on patellar tracking.

Maldonado’s research complements this work by focusing on arthroscopic hip preservation and patient outcomes. His areas of study include femoroacetabular impingement, labral preservation and reconstruction, capsular management, hip instability, revision hip arthroscopy, gluteal tendon repair and return to sports. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications examining outcomes among adolescents, young adults, athletes and other active patients.

Together, Mansour and Maldonado bring complementary expertise in open and arthroscopic hip preservation. Their research supports more precise surgical planning, evidence-based treatment and improved outcomes across the full spectrum of hip preservation care.
