Hip Preservation Program

Overview

Under the leadership of Director Alfred A. Mansour III, MD, and Co-Director David R. Maldonado, MD, the Comprehensive Hip Preservation Program advances research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of adolescents and adults with complex hip conditions.

Dr. Mansour’s research focuses on adolescent and young adult hip preservation, including return to sports after periacetabular osteotomy, perioperative pain management and the use of 3D computer modeling to improve surgical planning. He also studies complex knee preservation in collaboration with Walter R. Lowe, MD. Their work examines knee kinematics after high tibial osteotomy and slope-reducing high tibial osteotomy, as well as the effects of limb alignment on patellar tracking.

Dr. Maldonado’s clinical and academic expertise focuses on advanced and complex hip preservation, with particular emphasis on revision hip arthroscopy, complex labral preservation and reconstruction, and ligamentum teres reconstruction. His expertise also encompasses femoroacetabular impingement, capsular management and hip microinstability, borderline hip dysplasia, and the open and endoscopic treatment of complex extra-articular hip pathology, including gluteus medius and minimus tears and proximal hamstring injuries. His research focuses on patient selection, surgical decision-making, advanced and revision surgical techniques, and outcomes following complex hip preservation surgery. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, with extensive contributions to the advancement of hip preservation and hip arthroscopy.

Together, Dr. Mansour and Dr. Maldonado bring complementary expertise in open and arthroscopic hip preservation. Their research supports more precise surgical planning, evidence-based treatment and improved outcomes across the full spectrum of hip preservation care.
