Histology

Certain biopsy types including fascia, heart, liver, lung, muscle, nerve, renal, and skin biopsies require special handling and need to be coordinated with the performing laboratory. Please call 713-500-5324 before collecting one of these biopsy types to get special collection and transport instructions.

Collection of other specimen types:

    • Use care to not crush any biopsy or specimen collection during the collection process.
    • All specimen should be immediately placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Proper formalin to specimen ratio is 10:1. Do not force large specimen into small containers.
    • Each separately identified specimen should be given its own container and labeled with the date, time, and site of collection.
    • Only one requisition is necessary per patient, but should list each individual specimen collected and the collection site. This information should exactly match what is recorded on each specimen container.
    • Please contact UTPath at 713-500-5255 or utpath@uth.tmc.edu for supplies.

UTPath will perform grossing, frozen sections when requested or indicated, processing, embedding in paraffin, microtomy, staining and Pathologist diagnostic review on biopsies and surgical resections.

For questions regarding “Technical Component Only” or “Professional Component Only” please contact UTPath at 713-500-5401.
