Residency Program
Welcome to the Pathology Residency Program at UTHealth McGovern Medical School!
We are proud to offer a resident-focused program accredited for 28 resident positions, with limited fellowships to ensure that residents take ownership of cases and receive focused training from faculty. Our faculty members maintain open door policies, encouraging residents to seek guidance and discuss cases anytime. Faculty mentors provide support and career development, ensuring that our graduates secure positions in top fellowship programs.
Training Environment and Opportunities
Diverse Clinical Settings
Our location in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) provides access to multiple training institutions and diverse patient populations. Residents gain clinical training in a variety of settings:
- Academic Hospital: Memorial Hermann Hospital-TMC
- Public Health: Harris Health-LBJ Hospital
- Outreach Laboratory: UTPath
- Pediatric Hospital: Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital
- Oncology Focused Hospital: University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
- Forensic Institute: Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences
These diverse practice settings expose residents to a broad spectrum of patients and pathologies, enriching their training experience.
Educational and Didactic Programs
In addition to daily protected didactic conference time, resident education is supplemented with an abundance of additional conferences and learning opportunities, including:
- Unknown Case Conferences: Engaging discussions on challenging cases.
- Journal Clubs: Review and discussion of current literature.
- Grand Rounds: Presentations by experts on various topics in pathology.
- Multidisciplinary Conferences: Collaborative learning with other medical specialties.
Residents also develop teaching skills by leading conferences and educating rotating medical students and residents and fellows from other fields of medicine.
Research and Leadership Development
Our residents participate in research and leadership activities, supported by generous funding for travel to meetings and manuscript publications. This active involvement in research and leadership positions extends within our institutions as well as at the state and national levels.
