Third Year Elective Student Rotation

PATH-3030: This three-week-long elective provides an introductory experience to both anatomic and clinical pathology. Students will have the opportunity to engage in core pathology areas, including surgical pathology, cytology, blood bank, and hematopathology. The rotation is designed to give students a broad overview of the field, enabling them to understand the different subspecialties and their clinical applications.

 

Fourth Year Elective Student Rotations

(ANATOMIC) PATH-4001: This four-week-long elective student rotation offers exposure to various surgical pathology subspecialties such as gastrointestinal, gynecological, and genitourinary pathology. Additionally, students will gain hands-on experience in cytopathology. Students also have the option to participate in the autopsy service, where they will learn the intricacies of post-mortem examinations and their relevance to clinical practice.

(CLINICAL) PATH-4007: This four-week elective rotation in clinical pathology provides students with a comprehensive overview of hematopathology, microbiology, and immunology. The rotation also includes an introduction to transfusion medicine, where students learn about blood product management and compatibility testing. This elective is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for diagnosing a variety of clinical conditions.

(Surgical Pathology/Autopsy) PATH 4M12: This two-week elective student rotation offers exposure  to surgical pathology and autopsy, including specimen workflow all the way through final diagnosis. Students will strengthen anatomy-based interpretation of common surgical specimens, from gross pathologic description to correlation of findings with organ system anatomy and clinical care. Currently this elective is only open to students attending McGovern Medical School on the applied anatomy career-focused track.

(Transfusion Medicine for the Acute Care Career Focused Track) PATH 4M13: This two week elective student rotation serves as an introduction to basic blood banking and patient blood management practices. Students will work with blood bank faculty to evaluate blood product workflows and transfusion reactions in real time, as well as cover basic interpretation of coagulation studies and assist with recognition and treatment of major acute-care coagulopathies. Currently this elective is only open to students attending McGovern Medical School on the acute care career-focused track.

Fourth Year Advanced Patient Care Selective Rotation

Student and attending at gross benchPathology APC-4140: This four-week-long Advanced Patient Care Selective is tailored for students planning to pursue a career in pathology. This rigorous rotation offers in-depth exploration of the field, allowing students to develop advanced skills that are crucial for their future residency programs. The rotation covers hematopathology, transfusion medicine, surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy. Through hands-on experience and close mentorship, students gain a deep understanding of diagnostic techniques and the role of pathology in patient care.
