Renal Pathology Fellowship
Fellowship Director: Amanda Tchakarov, MD
Led by Dr. Amanda Tchakarov, MD, our one-year Renal Pathology Fellowship offers comprehensive training in a high-volume outreach service, processing over 1,000 kidney biopsies annually. We receive biopsies from multiple hospitals throughout the Texas Medical Center and Houston region, providing exposure to a diverse mix of native and transplant biopsies, including pediatric and onco-nephrology cases. Our state-of-the-art special tissues laboratory and electron microscopy facilities ensure rapid case turnaround and offer hands-on experience in laboratory management.
Fellowship Overview:
- Clinical duties include preparation of cases with interpretation of immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, photography of cases, and report writing. Fellows participate in daily sign out of cases. Fellows have progressive responsibility for cases with the expectation of reaching independent sign-out by the completion of training.
- Teaching is primarily case-based, via one-on-one tutorials and is supplemented by readings, conferences and regular interactions with faculty.
- Fellows are involved in scholarly activities and will spend approximately 20% of their time on research and teaching.
- As fellows progress through training they will take the lead in educating rotating pathology residents and Nephrology Fellows. They will also prepare and present multidisciplinary conferences and Grand Rounds.
Example Fellow Schedule:
- Our academic year is divided into 13 four-week long blocks, the fellow will rotate on renal pathology for the majority of the blocks.
- At the beginning of the fellowship, the fellow will shadow in the Special Tissues Histology Laboratory and the Electron Microscopy Laboratory to provide a basis for the understanding of the processing of renal biopsies.
- There is the opportunity for interested fellows to rotate in other areas of Anatomic Pathology (such as GU pathology) for 1-2 blocks, but this is not a program requirement.
- The fellow will be assigned to an average of one weekend of stat case review call per block.

- Fellows must be board certified or board-eligible in either Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Anatomic Pathology.
- Fellows must be eligible to obtain a Texas Medical License.
