Hematopathology Fellowship

The one-year, ACGME-accredited Hematopathology Fellowship at UTHealth Houston, led by Dr. Jacob Armstrong, MD provides advanced training in morphologic evaluation of bone marrow biopsies, lymph nodes and other surgical specimens, peripheral blood smears and body fluids, interpretation of flow cytometry data, and incorporation of cytogenetic and molecular studies to provide the comprehensive diagnoses required for excellent care across the entire spectrum of adult and pediatric neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematologic disorders. The program additionally offers rotations in a dedicated coagulation and immunology service, providing further experience in areas such as light transmission aggregometry, von Willebrand disease testing and hemoglobin electrophoresis.

Training Overview:

• Comprehensive hematopathology training, including morphologic evaluation, immunohistochemical evaluation and interpretation of flow cytometry data across a broad variety of sample types, including bone marrow, blood, body fluids, lymph nodes and other surgical samples, as well as integration of cytogenetic and molecular data into diagnostic evaluation.
• Exposure to a variety of practice settings, including a large subspecialized academic center with digital pathology sign out, and general clinical pathology practice in the county hospital setting.
  • Opportunity to participate in blood bank-related activities in county hospital setting depending on personal interest and career goals.
• Hands-on experience in interpretation of coagulation studies, including lupus anticoagulant testing, mixing studies, light transmission platelet aggregometry and von Willebrand disease testing, as well as evaluation of hemoglobinopathies utilizing capillary electrophoresis and HPLC.
• Interaction with multidisciplinary teams through tumor boards and other multidisciplinary conferences, in addition to collaborative research initiatives.
• Involvement in student and resident education, allowing for the development of teaching and mentorship skills.

 Fellow Schedule:

• Our academic year is divided into thirteen 4-week blocks. The majority of takes place at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center (external link) and University of Texas Houston McGovern Medical School, with additional core rotations at LBJ General Hospital (external link). Elective rotations are available, including rotations at neighboring institutions within the Texas Medical Center. (external link)

  • LBJ General Clinical Pathology: 2 blocks (8 weeks)
  • MHH-TMC/UT Houston Coagulation and Immunology: 1 block (4 weeks)
  • Outside Hematopathology Rotation: 1 block (4 weeks)
  • Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology: 1 block (4 weeks)
