McGovern Medical School to host conversation from space with astronaut

Want to have a chance to talk directly to an astronaut live from space? McGovern Medical School at UTHealth will offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience next month as alumna

McGovern Medical School alum and astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor, M.D., will talk directly to the UTHealth community from the International Space Station this September.

Auñón-Chancellor joined NASA as a flight surgeon in 2006 and was selected as an astronaut in 2009. She launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2018 with the Expedition 56/57 crew. Auñón-Chancellor graduated from McGovern Medical School in 2001 and completed her internal medicine residency and aerospace medicine residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB). She also earned a master’s degree in public health from UTMB.

Auñón-Chancellor will be taking questions fielded by students, staff and faculty at McGovern Medical School directly from the ISS. The live, 20-minute talk will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in MSB.3001. (Note: A more narrow timeframe will be forthcoming from NASA). A list of about 20 questions will be curated from submissions from the UTHealth community.

Please note that due to time limitations and NASA approvals, not all submissions may be used. The deadline for submitting questions is Sept. 1, and can be sent to devan.santora@uth.tmc.edu.
