NRC 16th Annual Public Forum On Bipolar Disorder & Depression

August 26, 2015

Bipolar disorder and depression will be the focus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Neuroscience Research Center’s 16th annual brain forum from 10:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday, February 12th.

Jair C. Soares, M.D., chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School and executive director of The University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC), will moderate the event, which will be in the main lecture hall on the third floor of McGovern Medical School, 6431 Fannin St.

Joining Soares will be panelists Prashant Gajwani, M.D. and Alan Swann, M.D., all leading authorities in the field of mood disorders who see patients and conduct research at UTHealth’s Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders. Gajwani is an associate professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UTHealth. Swann directs research services at HCPC and is UTHealth’s vice chair of research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

“Mood disorders, which include bipolar disorders and depression, rank among the top 10 causes of worldwide disability, and by 2020, it is estimated that the disease burden of depression on society is expected to be second only to ischemic heart disease,” Soares said. “We hope that people will join us for this forum to learn more about this critical health issue and the work that is being done to offer new hope and new treatments.”
