The Department maintains a GE Healtcare Typhoon Trio+ flat bed imaging system originally acquired through an equipment grant funded in 2010 by the NIH/NCRR (S10 RR027359). The Trio+ is a state-of-the-art imaging system that can scan a variety of sample types from 1000 to 10 µm resolution. The typical use of this type of instrument is for quantitative analysis of Western blots, tissue sections, or other relatively flat samples. The system has three lasers capable of simultaneously exciting three different fluorescent dyes. Western blots or tissue sections can be stained with multiple antibody/fluorescent dye combinations so within sample analyses can be compared directly. Data analysis is accomplished through the IQTL suite of software modules.
In addition, the equipment grant funded the purchase of the DeCyder 2.0 software and an accompanying workstation. The DeCyder software automates the analysis of 2D-DIGE (difference in gel electrophoresis) data that has become the standard for high-resolution comparative analysis of protein samples using 2D IEF/SDS-PAG electrophoresis.
