Omar has been in design for over 3 years after completing his BFA in graphic design the Art Institute of Houston. He is also interested in fine art, photography, and anything that keeps his creative juices flowing.
Even though he was born in Texas, he grew up in central Mexico and credits his upbringing as a source of inspiration for his work. He returned to Texas at age 12 and has lived in Houston for the past 8 years.
Outside of work he enjoys road trips and visiting historic towns and recording it all on Instagram. He is also a film fanatic with his favorite genres being indie, drama, thriller, fantasy, mystery and true crime, and social documentaries.
His favorite food is, of course, Mexican and anything with some spice in it. He is always on the hunt for authentic Mexican food and street tacos in Houston.
Adnan is the newest web developer at the Office of Communications. After completing his Bachelors in Computer Information Systems, Adnan sought out to combine his creative mind and technical skills in marketing. He has been working with various content management systems and languages but settled on becoming a WordPress developer. He is also interested in photography, design and film.
Outside of work, Adnan enjoys spending time with family and friends. He is an avid reader of comic books and tries to catch up on his backlog of video games and movies whenever he gets time to himself.
Dwight Andrews has had a passion for making faculty, students, and staff of McGovern Medical School look their best since he first joined the school in 2006. He graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in Photography in 1986 and boasts a 20-year-long career as a photo journalist, working at publications like The Galveston County Daily News, The Brazosport Facts, The Texas City Sun, and contract work for the Houston Chronicle and Reuters. He has earned more than 40 awards from the Associated Press Managing Editors Association and an Anson Jones Award from the Texas Medical Association.
Dwight currently lives with his wife in Galveston County, and her family lives throughout Greater Houston. In his spare time, he can often be found cycling across the countryside, bowling, looking at art, and listening to music. His favorite movies are The Big Easy and The Big Lebowski.
Kathleen Atkins first began working at McGovern Medical School in 1986 and tried retiring in 2010, but we wouldn’t let her go. As the senior support specialist, Kathy is always ready to assist clients with a smile and is known around the Office of Communications as the Queen of Chartfield Strings and the official Office Decorator. She has more than 20 years of experience as an executive assistant in the Department of Surgery and the Division of Plastic Surgery and is regarded as a go-to source of knowledge for all things Medical School. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Kathy’s family first moved to Houston when she was 4 years old and she has a daughter and numerous nieces and nephews here and another daughter who lives in Dallas. She is currently working on her associate’s degree in Business at Lone Star College.
When she isn’t serving as the part-time, front-line resource at the office, Kathy enjoys participating in Fall craft shows, painting and decorating landscape timber reindeer, snowmen, pilgrims, and other pieces, and writing poetry. She enjoys anything Tex-Mex and her favorite movies are Gone With The Wind and The Way We Were.
Darla Brown oversees communications for the McGovern Medical School, including publications, social media, and employee and executive communications. Hailing from San Antonio, Darla graduated from Tulane University with a bachelor’s of arts degree in French and political science and later completed leadership studies at Rice University. She honed her writing and editing skills working for newspapers, spending five years an editor and reporter with stints in Montana, New Mexico, and Texas, before moving into higher education communications at University of Houston and McGovern Medical School since 2000.
Outside of the office, Darla loves reading and listening to audio books and keeping up with her two daughters and husband in Pearland. The one food she couldn’t live without is potatoes.
Randy Gay is a product of the University of Houston Valenti School of Communications and has worked in medical videography since 2011. He participated in the world-first live Twitter broadcast of an open heart surgery, as well as the Short Award-winning video “Google Glass Helped Kids in Hospital Visit Zoo” and he creates content for McGovern Medical School’s websites and other outlets. His experience in filming and editing dates all the way back to 2002 when he was still in the sixth grade.
Beyond his work behind a camera, Randy enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, traveling, and watching movies.
Carlos Gonzalez has been a Web Developer with McGovern Medical School for almost 10 years. Originally from Joppatowne, Maryland, Carlos holds two bachelor of science degrees and has been building websites since before the days of Netscape Navigator. With the help of a diverse work background, he helped complete the transfer of the Medical School department websites to a new template system in 2008 and again to a WordPress content management system in 2014-2015. He is also familiar with creating e-newsletters and integration with MailChimp.
When not plugging away on school websites, Carlos enjoys spending time with his family here in Houston and reading. His favorite movie is Groundhog Day.
Patricia has served as administrative manager for the Office of Communications since 2013 and ensures that all customers and support services in the department, including financial management, invoicing, budgets, and vendor management, are at their best. She believes that administration is the back-bone of daily business operation. Born in Suva, Fiji Islands, Patricia has a bachelor of science degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Business Administration. Her background includes working in office management and administration for over 15 years.
Beyond ensuring the OOC is running like a well-oiled machine, Patricia’s hobbies include traveling and participating in service projects with her sorority. She loves seafood and some of her favorite movies include Coming to America, Silence of the Lambs, and The Sound of Music.
Roman Petrowski, editor of Scoop and communication specialist, joined McGovern Medical School from the University of Houston, where he worked in athletics communications. He is involved in all internal communications for McGovern Medical School and leads our social media efforts.
He is a University of Houston graduate and loves watching sports, movies, traveling and playing with his corgi, Vita. For Roman, movies come in two varieties: sports (his favorite: Major League) and non-sports (favorite: Back to the Future) categories.
A native Texan, he enjoys cooking anything that winds up with grill marks.
Roy Prichard has been with McGovern Medical School for over 20 years and boasts 30 years of design experience. A native of Pasadena, Texas, Roy graduated with an associate of arts from San Jacinto Junior College and a bachelor’s of fine arts in graphics from the University of Houston. Prior to joining UTHealth, he worked in the graphic design in the oil industry, for the Pasadena Citizen in layout and at St. Joseph Hospital.
Roy has a sister and nephews residing in Pasadena and spends his time outside of work singing, painting, and watching movies – his favorite is The Color Purple, and traveling.
