3DSystems HiQ Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D fabrication
The Vanguard SLS system has the capability of creating a 3D part from a Computer Aided Design (CAD) file. The machine has an effective working volume of 35 L, so multiple small parts can be fabricated simultaneously. SLS fabrication works by using a laser to sinter a powder into a solid form in a layer by layer fashion. This allows for the rapid and precise fabrication of parts that would be difficult or impossible to build using conventional machining. Several different types of powder can be used, with each having different mechanical properties for use in different situations.
Biomedical applications of SLS technology include prototype development, creation of tissue scaffolds, and generating molds for use in reconstructive surgery. MRI or CT data can be directly imported into specialized software that can create parts such as mandibular or skull prosthetics which precisely match the contours of the patients’ anatomy.
Minitech CNC machining system
This is a benchtop machining system that is used for machining components used in prototypes and custom experimental instrumentation. The Minitech system provides 4 axes of movement (3 translational, 1 rotational), and is effective in machining plastics, wood, and metals. SolidWorks as well as Visual Mill CNC software allow designers to turn a concept or idea into a tangible part in very little time.
We have a well stocked fabrication lab that includes Metcal soldering and desoldering systems, Agilent™ digital oscilloscopes and waveform generators, and fabrication tools. PCB design software allows us to turn a design on a prototyping breadboard into a specialized PCB that saves space and improves circuit performance.

Optical Breadboard and Accessories
48″L x 24″W Edmund Optics Benchtop optical breadboard with numerous accessories including translation rails, rotary mounts and various beam splitters. 2 high speed digital cameras and 1 color CCD can be used for various applications such as particle image velocimetry or machine vision.
