Dr. Vasanthi Jayaraman collaborated with Dr. Edward Twomey at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to visualize opening of the AMPA receptor in response to binding glutamate. Structures of the AMPA receptor were determined using cryo-EM by flash freezing the receptor after exposure to glutamate for brief periods of time at body temperature. The images revealed a clamshell-like structure of the AMPA receptor closing around glutamate to pull open the channel. Dr. Elisa Carrillo, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was a co-author on the paper.
