Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH)

Virtual, Global Conference

March 2021

The Center for Global Health at McGovern Medical School successfully helped organize and co-sponsored the Consortium of Universities for Global Health’s (CUGH) annual conference from March 12-14th virtually. The conference was attended by nearly 2000 participants from ~100 countries, making it the largest audience registered in CUGH history.

Drs Iyengar and Aibana, who serve as the Center for Global Health directors, organized a Satellite session during the conference addressing Mobile health interventions in resource poor settings in collaboration with their international partners in India. The Center for Global Health also successfully collaborated with faculty members from the School of Public Health, MD Anderson, and the School of Bioinformatics as well as an international collaborator from India to organize a Plenary session entitled “Building capacity for control of non-communicable diseases in resource-challenged settings.” Both programs were well received and well attended. There was also a student poster titled “Depression Expression in Spiti Valley, India” that was presented.

The execution of this conference was a culmination of the Center’s effort to highlight global health activities across UTHealth. The Center has continued its efforts to train medical students and provide support in establishing international ties and collaboration despite COVID 19. Additional accomplishments include: establishment of a travel portal to monitor medical students’ participation in international projects, implementing a robust curriculum for the global health concentration, creating a centralized platform to showcase global health efforts at the medical school. Future goals include improving collaboration across UT schools, establishment of MOUs with international organizations, and advancing global health opportunities to interested students, trainees, and faculty.

Visiting Lecture by Dr. Tierney

McGovern Medical School, Texas

February 2020

Too often, global health engagement are merely “medical tourism” activities that do not serve local needs. For decades, AMPATH has employed a different approach based on mutual respect, mutual benefit and enhancing local capacity for high-quality care. This presentation described the AMPATH model and how it’s been implemented to improve health outcomes in East Africa while also benefiting U.S. trainees, faculty, and institutions.

Himalayan Health Exchange

Spiti Valley, India

June 2019

“Our experience this summer with Himalayan Health Exchange was incredible. We were able to practice skills of history and physical taking, presenting to physicians, and developing a plan for our patients while also experiencing some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth. There was plenty of free time for exploring, but still time every day dedicated to learning issues to make sure everyone was able to learn and grow each day. Overall, it was amazing and we cannot wait to go again in the future.” – Medical Student
