Department of Internal Medicine Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Programs
Clinical
Our fellows train within robust, parallel geriatric and palliative care services at LBJ General Hospital and Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, two major institutions serving diverse patient populations. Clinical experiences also extend to private outpatient clinics and a house call program supported by UT Physicians and the Harris Health System. This breadth of settings prepares fellows for excellence across inpatient, outpatient, and community-based care.
Education
The Joan and Stanford Alexander Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine collaborates closely with medical school faculty to advance a comprehensive geriatric curriculum for learners at all levels. Fellows engage in rich teaching experiences and may participate in a variety of electives across geriatric and palliative care settings. Our educational approach emphasizes mentorship, interdisciplinary learning, and professional growth.
Research
Research within the Division focuses on improving care for vulnerable older adults, including victims of elder mistreatment, disaster-affected elders, and frail hospitalized patients. Fellows have opportunities to engage in meaningful clinical, quality improvement, and scholarly projects alongside experienced faculty. This work supports the development of physicians committed to advocacy, inquiry, and evidence-based care.
Our Mission
The mission of the Geriatric Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Programs at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston is to train compassionate, highly skilled physicians who provide patient- and family-centered care across the continuum of aging and serious illness. Through interdisciplinary clinical training, mentorship, and scholarly opportunities, we prepare fellows for diverse academic and clinical careers while promoting dignity, independence, quality of life, and excellence in care for older adults and individuals facing serious illness.
