Class 2024-2025
Ihtisham Qayum, MD
What are you most excited about this year?
I am thrilled to learn and practice in the world’s largest medical center, mastering the Age-Friendly Health System’s core values and integrating them into my work. I am also exploring Houston, enjoying its expansive skyline and diverse restaurants.
Why did you choose Geriatric Medicine as a subspecialty?
Growing up in a large family, I have watched my parents and elders age, and their illnesses often caused me deep concern. Observing my elder sister care for our parents during their illness, I saw her pay close attention to every aspect of their care, which highlighted to me how essential specialized care for the older population is.
In my home country, there wasn’t a formal practice of Geriatric Medicine. When I became a physician, I was introduced to working in a Geriatric Medicine unit during my time in the UK. This experience sparked my desire to learn more and specialize in the field. I was fortunate to secure a position in Geriatric Medicine at UT Health Houston. I am eager to continue this journey and provide comprehensive care to older adults who often face multimorbid and multifaceted conditions.
What is the most fun thing you want people to know about you?
I enjoy writing poetic phrases and am working toward publishing a collection next year.
