How UTHealth Manages Mobile Access
UTHealth uses Microsoft Intune and Office 365 to securely manage access to email, Teams, and shared content on personal devices (commonly referred to as Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD).
Option 1: App-Only Access (MAM)
For users who only need access to email, this is the quickest and easiest option. Simply download the Microsoft Outlook app from the App Store or Google Play, sign in with your UTHealth credentials, and you’re done. Intune secures the Outlook app in the background without touching the rest of your device.
Option 2: Full Device Enrollment (MDM)
For users who prefer a fully enrolled device experience, or whose role requires broader data access, full Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment is also available through Intune.
This option is ideal for iOS users who prefer the native Mail app or Android users who want a dedicated work profile.
Getting Started: Installing the Intune Company Portal
To enroll your device with Intune, you will need to install the Company Portal app, published by Microsoft. It is available on both the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).
Understanding MAM and MDM
What is Mobile Application Management (MAM)?
MAM allows employee-owned (BYOD) devices to securely access UTHealth data without requiring UTHealth to manage the entire device. Instead, management policies are applied only at the application level—covering configuration, compliance, and security settings for specific apps such as Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Teams. At UTHealth, MAM policies are delivered through Microsoft Intune.
What is Mobile Device Management (MDM)?
MDM provides comprehensive device-level management, including over-the-air distribution of applications, data, and configuration settings across all mobile devices on the network—both UTHealth-owned and employee-owned. MDM helps reduce support costs and business risk by ensuring devices connecting to the UTHealth network meet security and compliance standards.
At UTHealth, the following solutions are in use:
- Microsoft Intune — MDM and MAM solution for BYOD devices.
- Microsoft Intune and Jamf Pro — MDM solutions for UTHealth-owned devices.
A Note on Device Encryption
| ⚠ Encryption Requirement Any mobile device that cannot be encrypted is not permitted to access UTHealth online resources. |
Information Regarding Privacy
Connecting your personal device to UTHealth resources is voluntary. If you choose to enroll your device in the UTHealth Mobile Device Management platform, you agree to allow UTHealth to collect a limited amount of information from your device through the Intune Company Portal.
Your privacy is important to us — UTHealth collects only the minimum information necessary to manage and secure the device.
