Cizik Eye Clinic streamlines cataract surgery with new OBS services

May 23, 2025

Since the Robert Cizik Eye Clinic recently transformed its minor procedure space into a fully operational office-based surgery (OBS) area, cataract and other ocular surgeries have become easier for patients. The trend has gained traction nationwide as more practices recognize the benefits of performing surgeries without the need for conventional anesthesia.

“What’s nice about OBS cataract surgery is that patients are familiar with the staff, so there’s a continuity of care with the same friendly face, which reduces anxiety,” said Betsy Rollins, the Clinic’s senior practice manager. “Plus, patients can walk out with their loved one or friend within 15 minutes of their surgery.”

While conventional anesthesia comes with strict fasting and bathing guidelines, the Clinic’s OBS protocols feature an oral-based sedative administered at the office. Patients are asked to take the sedative, then they’re taken to the operating room. The entire process usually takes around 45 minutes, in and out, with minimal recovery time.

OBS became available at the Clinic in early December 2024. Surgeries, initially offered one day a week, are now offered up to eight days a month. Since January, our teams have successfully performed approximately 45 cataract surgeries, along with other procedures like upper-lid blepharoplasty and glaucoma treatment.

“As one of the first in our group to embrace office-based surgery, I quickly recognized the value of performing cataract surgery safely and efficiently without the need for traditional anesthesia,” said Patrick B. Wu, MD.My patients have all been pleasantly surprised by how easy the whole experience is. Many can’t wait to have their second eye done!”

Patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. People love the comfort and convenience, along with being able to eat before surgery. Overall, OBS aligns with the Clinic’s commitment to enhancing patient care and satisfaction.
