Visiting Medical Students
Visiting Medical Students (US)
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers in-person rotations for US visiting fourth-year medical students, though space is limited. Â Applicants will apply through VSLO for official acceptance and will be notified by the Medical Student Education Office for University approval.
Orthopaedic Surgery Clerkship Experience
Our orthopaedic surgery clerkships provide an immersive, hands‑on experience across the full spectrum of musculoskeletal care. Students actively integrate medical and surgical knowledge while caring for patients with orthopaedic conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
As a core member of a multidisciplinary orthopaedic team, you will participate in every phase of patient care—from initial evaluation and decision‑making to pre‑operative planning, post‑operative management, and intraoperative surgical exposure.
The four‑week clerkship is structured to maximize clinical breadth and depth:
- 2 weeks on a high‑volume Trauma rotation at either Memorial Hermann Hospital Trauma or Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Hospital
- 2 weeks on a focused orthopaedic sub‑specialty rotation
Clerkship Highlights
- Sub‑Specialty Exposure
Rotate through two different orthopaedic sub‑specialties, allowing exploration of diverse practice areas and surgical techniques. - On‑Call Experience
Share in the call experience alongside residents, gaining independence in patient evaluations, casting, splinting, and acute orthopaedic management. - Didactic Education
Weekly one‑hour, faculty‑led lectures and small‑group discussions covering core orthopaedic topics and clinical decision‑making. - Program Leadership Engagement
Dedicated meeting with the Residency Program Director, offering insight into training, mentorship, and career paths in orthopaedic surgery.
This clerkship is designed for students seeking meaningful clinical responsibility, strong mentorship, and a comprehensive introduction to orthopaedic surgery.
