Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship, a part of The McGovern Medical School is a one-year ACGME accredited post-graduate sports medicine and shoulder fellowship. It is a multi-disciplinary fellowship that interacts closely with other medical specialties including radiology, athletic training, physical therapy, and sports concussion, in addition to exposure to basic and clinical science research. The applying year’s class will consist of four fellows whose education and training will be overseen by 5 full-time faculty and 9 additional faculty members. Dr. Steven Flores serves as the Fellowship Program Director.
Our fellowship offers an in-depth experience in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder and is intended to provide fellows with the skills and knowledge to further their development as a Sports Medicine physician and surgeon. In addition to a high patient volume, including athletes from all levels of competition, a strong emphasis is placed on team coverage specifically high school, collegiate, and professional sports. Throughout the year, fellows will be exposed to surgical and non-surgical treatment of various conditions ranging from young teenage athletes to weekend warriors. In addition, fellows will have significant exposure to shoulder arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy to further their skill set as practicing physicians. The philosophy of the program is to develop and promote Orthopaedic Sports Medicine through patient care, education, and research.
The Sports Medicine fellowship is an extremely active clinical fellowship with exposure to ACL reconstructions, Meniscal Transplants, Osteochondrial Transplants, PCL Reconstructions, Multi-ligament Reconstructions, UCL Reconstructions, Rotator Cuff Repairs, Labral Repairs, Total Shoulder, Arthroplasty, Hip Preservation, Hip Arthroscopy, Hip Labral Repairs, and Hip Injections.
Our chair, Dr. Walter Lowe, has built a world-class faculty. The program prides itself in assuring that its faculty are trained to be the best educators possible.
