Fellowship Program Overview
The UTHealth Houston Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship accepts four fellows each year and provides advanced surgical training within a high-volume academic environment. Five full-time faculty members and nine additional faculty members oversee clinical education and mentorship. Steven E. Flores, MD, serves as fellowship program director and leads a structured, comprehensive training experience designed to prepare fellows for successful careers in academic orthopedics, team physician roles, and high-volume private practice.
High-Volume Surgical Training in Sports Medicine
This one-year Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship delivers extensive operative experience in sports-related injuries and complex shoulder conditions. Fellows care for athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels, as well as active patients of all ages. Additionally, our program places strong emphasis on team coverage, sideline management, and longitudinal athlete care.
Throughout the year, fellows gain expertise in both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of sports injuries. In addition, fellows develop advanced technical skills in shoulder arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy, broadening their capabilities as orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons.
