In 2019, fellows performed over 1,900 surgical procedures while faculty saw over 14,000 clinic visits.

Didactics and Curriculum 

The didactic and clinical education curriculum for the fellowship is based on the AOSSM Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Curriculum. On a daily basis, our fellows will work closely with key medical professionals including primary care physicians, radiologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. In addition to one-on-one mentorship, weekly sports medicine conferences are held to help facilitate the teaching of the required curriculum. Fellows’ case presentations are structured to help prepare for the ABOS Part 2 Oral Board Exam which includes data gathering, diagnosis and interpretive skills, treatment plan, technical skill, outcomes, and applied knowledge. Throughout the year, departmental grand rounds, visiting professors, and morbidity and mortality conferences are held and attended when appropriate topics are presented. Journal club, cadaveric labs, and sports medicine research meetings are also typically held every six to eight weeks to further your education and surgical training. Performance evaluations will be based on the ACGME six core competencies after each rotation and biannual milestones evaluations. The educational documentation is overseen by the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) and the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC).

Patient Care

A typical week generally sees the fellow in clinic one to two days with faculty while operating two to four days a week, with a half-day set aside for research and other responsibilities. Our fellowship provides extensive operative experience, team coverage opportunities, and sports medicine education. The fellows will gain extensive exposure to routine cases, as well as complex primary and revision cases. Knee procedures include complex revision, ligamentous, meniscal, and cartilage procedure in addition to exposure to osteotomies around the knee. Complex arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures, including shoulder arthroplasty, provide a comprehensive shoulder experience. Fellows will also have exposure to hip arthroscopy, with the opportunity to see more invasive hip preservation techniques if so desired.
