Neuropathology Fellowship

Doctor Hidehiro Takei

Fellowship Director: Dr. Hidehiro Takei

Our two-year, ACGME-accredited Neuropathology Fellowship, led by Dr. Hidehiro Takei, MD, offers comprehensive training at Memorial Hermann Hospital and UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School. Fellows gain extensive exposure to a wide range of cases, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic neuropathology, pediatric and developmental disorders, and ophthalmologic pathology. They also train in neuromuscular biopsies through our high-volume outreach service, UTPath, and participate in autopsy brain cutting to identify gross pathologies. In the second year, fellows engage in research tailored to their career goals within the department or in neuroscience-related laboratories at the university.

Fellow Training Overview:

    • Neuropathology Frozen Section: Interpret slides and provide a preliminary diagnosis under faculty supervision.
    • Surgical Grossing: Handle eye specimens, large brain resections (including epilepsy cases), and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease specimens.
    • Case Previewing for Sign-out: Prepare a preliminary report with detailed microscopic description, including immunohistochemistry findings, and diagnosis.
    • Daily Sign-out Sessions: Review neuro-oncology cases and muscle and nerve biopsies with the attending neuropathologist.
    • Conferences: Actively participate in CNS tumor, pituitary tumor, and spine tumor boards.
    • CNS Autopsy: Perform postmortem brain cutting (adult and pediatric) and contribute to report sign-out.
    • Research: Complete at least six months of research, presenting at professional meetings and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
