Students and Residents Shine at the Academic Surgical Congress

March 6, 2023

ASC InfographicThe 18th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, which is the joint meeting of the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) and the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), was held February 7-9, 2023, in Houston. McGovern Medical School has a strong history of engagement with the AAS and SUS, boasting several past presidents, including Drs. Tien Ko (AAS President, 2002), Lillian Kao (AAS President, 2014), and David Mercer (former Chief of Surgery at LBJGH, SUS President, 2004).

Highlights included a committee session co-led by Dr. Martin Blakely (McGovern Medical School) and Rebecca Snyder (MD Anderson) on “Innovations and Underused Existing Recommendations to Stimulate Randomized Clinical Trials in Surgery.” Dr. Blakely spoke on the problems with a dichotomous worldview around the p-value, and Dr. Kao discussed the advantages of Bayesian statistical analyses for surgical randomized trials.

However, presentations by students and residents were the main attraction of the meeting. Trainees included one pre-medical student, 21 medical students, and eight residents. Faculty mentors represented subspecialties ranging from trauma surgery to psychiatry.

Congratulations to everyone who presented!
