Biography

Oscar Olavarria, MD, MS, is a board-certified general surgeon with additional fellowship training in minimally invasive and robotic gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. Olavarria specializes in bariatrics/weight loss surgery, reflux/heartburn, ulcer disease, hiatal hernias, achalasia, and abdominal wall reconstruction for hernia repair. When appropriate, Dr. Olavarria also utilizes endoscopic (incision-less), laparoscopic, and robotic techniques for the care of the entire spectrum of abdominal surgical issues, including disorders of the gallbladder and appendix, small and large bowel obstruction, perforated ulcers, diverticulitis, gastrointestinal tumors and solid organs (spleen, adrenal glands, and pancreas). Additionally, he performs upper endoscopies and colonoscopies.

Dr. Olavarria has an appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He has conducted extensive research, including a master’s in clinical research, and has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and over 40 national/international presentations. He is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
