Mark J. Hobeika, MD, FACS is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He serves as Director of Abdominal Organ Transplantation at the Memorial Hermann Transplant Institute. His clinical practice includes liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation, and laparoscopic surgery for kidney donors. Dr. Hobeika returned to UTHealth Houston in his new role in April 2025, having previously served the university from 2012-2017.
Dr. Hobeika completed his medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, his general surgery residency at New York University, and his transplant surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His non-clinical efforts are focused on expanding donor organ utilization through research, policy, and education. He has specific expertise in advanced organ preservation technologies and liver transplantation using organs from donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors. Dr. Hobeika is an active member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and the International Liver Transplant Society and is co-founder of the ASTS Surgical Skills continuing professional development program.
