Biography

Dr. Joseph R. Cali, Jr. (JR) is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Cali earned his undergraduate degree in biology and mathematics from Boston College, and doctorate of medicine from Creighton University. He completed general surgery residency at Boston University and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr Cali joined the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Houston in 1993 and has since been part of the residency teaching program in colon and rectal surgery, which has transitioned to UT Physicians Colon and Rectal Clinic. In addition to a busy clinical practice Dr. Cali’s main interests have revolved around the improvement in patient care.  Dr Cali served as Chief of Staff at Memorial City Hospital from 2005 – 2007.  Dr Cali has been actively involved in quality improvement committees and is Chairman of the Memorial Hermann System Surgical Committee, Chairman of the System NSQIP Taskforce (Surgical Outcomes Committee), is a Board Member for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System and participates on many other committees. Dr Cali is married and has twins, Andrew and Grace.  As a family they enjoy outdoor activities including camping, snow skiing and hiking. Dr. Cali and his wife have a yearly trip to Colorado to climb “fourteeners”.  So far, they have climbed 7 mountains.
