Original Date: 02/2024 | Supersedes: NA | Last Review Date: 02/2024

Physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) are both vitally important to the care of our pediatric trauma patients. While there may be overlap in their therapies, they each serve a unique role in the post-injury rehabilitation process. They provide education and resources for our patients and families on safe mobility, developmental milestones, and recommendations for DME, outpatient rehab needs.

Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy Focuses on improving mobility and function while reducing pain following injury
Focuses on helping to regain the ability and independence to complete activities of daily living

PT and OT consultation are not essential for every trauma patient and should be based on the specific needs of each patient. Please remember that both PT and OT are finite resources and should be used thoughtfully on the trauma service to ensure they can focus their efforts on the patients who will derive benefit from their expertise.

Speech therapy also is essential for some trauma patients particularly with severe TBI, feeding difficulty (dysphagia) and post concussive- neuro/cognitive evaluation.
