STICU – Communication Policy


Original Date: 07/2022
Purpose: To outline the process of communication between the STICU physician team and the primary surgical team for critical patient events in the STICU.


List of clinical conditions that warrant immediate notification of primary surgical team:

  • New onset of acute respiratory failure
  • Need for intubation
  • Need for initiation of renal replacement therapy
  • Need for initiation of vasopressor therapy
  • New onset cardiac arrhythmia
  • Requirement for transfusion of ≥ 2 units of blood product
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Stroke

Process for communication:

  1. First notification will go to the intern covering the service as listed in Amion via PerfectServe.
  2. If there is no response within 10 minutes from the intern then notification will escalate to the senior resident/fellow covering the service via PerfectServe.
  3. If there is no response within 10 minutes from the senior resident/fellow then notification will escalate to the primary surgical faculty on call via PerfectServe.
  4. If the STICU team is unable to notify the primary surgical team by the steps listed in 1 through 3 then the STICU faculty will attempt to notify the primary faculty via cell phone (if available).

For patients on the OB-GYN service:

Call the OB Faculty SpectraLink at 713-704-7017

For patients on the Moody A Service:

Call the intern on call as listed in Amion.  If the intern does not respond then call the Chief Resident on Moody A. If the Chief Resident does not respond then call the faculty on call for Moody A

For patients on the Moody B Service:

Call the intern on call as listed in Amion.  If the intern does not respond then call the MIS Fellow on call.  If the MIS Fellow does not respond then call the faculty on call for Moody

For patients on the EGS Service:

Call the junior resident on the EGS SpectraLink at 713-704-7002.  If they do not answer call the EGS Faculty on Call as listed in Amion.

For all other subspecialty services refer to on call schedules from Amion and notify person listed on call.
