The Center for Advanced Cardiopulmonary Therapies and Transplantation (ACTAT) at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston is a patient-centered program integrating state-of-the-art procedures, devices, and therapies for patients with cardiovascular illnesses. ACTAT provides the full spectrum of therapies for patients in advanced stages of heart failure and lung disease, including transplantations, Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), total artificial hearts, advanced coronary and structural interventions, as well as advanced electrophysiology therapies through collaboration with EP Heart team at UTHealth. We conduct groundbreaking research that improves treatment outcomes for our patients in the Greater Houston area and across the nation.
ACTAT is accredited by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to perform organ transplantation. Since the program opened in 2012, we have performed over 315 heart transplants with a one-year survival rate in line with the national average of 90 percent.
As part of the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS), our team has implanted more than 2,800 percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices for cardiogenic shock and high-risk interventions, including over 500 LVADs for either bridge-to-transplant or destination therapy, with a five-year survival rate well above the national average. Our specialists have performed more than 3,500 percutaneous structural cases in the past seven years, including over 850 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) procedures, giving our patients access to the most advanced medical, surgical, and device therapies available for refractory cardiogenic shock.
