Key Objectives

The primary goal of the training program is to provide qualified physicians with a balanced, structured and scholarly experience in the field of advanced heart failure and transplantation. Our fellows will gain insight into the diagnosis and management of patients with advanced heart failure with an emphasis on recognizing which patients would benefit from which therapies. Patients will be seen both on the inpatient service and in the outpatient clinics. Our fellows will be exposed to all aspects of advanced heart failure and transplantation from asymptomatic patients to shock patients.

Fellows will receive training in the:

• Medical management with invasive hemodynamic monitoring and tailored medical therapy
• Electrophysiological therapies including biventricular pacing and automatic implantable defibrillators
• Surgical therapies including ventricular reduction surgery, ventricular assist devices, and cardiac transplantation
• Understanding of the psychological and social impact of heart failure as a chronic disease

Core Curriculum

When on the inpatient Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology service, the fellows will hold primary responsibility for care of all patients on the service as well as those patients on whom the service is consulted by cardiac surgery and other services in the hospital. While at times there will be a resident or nurse practitioner on the service as well, allowing the fellow to work in a supervisory manner, at other times patients will be cared for primarily by the fellow under the supervision of the attending physician. The fellow will participate in daily rounds Monday through Friday and one weekend day.

In addition to caring for patients in the clinics, UTHealth Houston’s faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the advancement of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published research and are highly regarded in their fields. You will have direct access to the heart failure faculty at UTHealth Houston throughout your training in the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation Cardiology Fellowship.

Applicant Criteria

• Applicants are selected through the National Residency Match Program (MATCH)
• Application season begins July and ends October each year
• MATCH deadlines must be met to participate
• Must be permanent resident, citizen, have J1- Visa, or be eligible for J1-Visa
• Must have completed three years of ACGME Internal Medicine residency program
• Must have completed three years of Cardiovascular Disease Training in ACGME Program
• Must be ECFMG certified (if an International Medical Graduate)
• Are eligible for a TMB Physician Training Permit- GME starts this process
