The Mechanical Circulatory Support Device (MCSD) Therapy Fellowship at UTHealth Houston is an advanced one-year TMB approved program organized under the leadership of Igor Gregoric, MD. The fellowship develops proficiency in the surgical implantation and medical management of mechanical circulatory devices.
In this fellowship, trainees are involved in the patient selection process, preoperative optimization of patients, implantation of devices, and postoperative care and management of patients.
The primary objective of this program is to provide the fellows with an intensive training curriculum that will education the fellows on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with advanced cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on device selection, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, assist device implantation and post operative patient care management.

Through didactic and clinical instruction, the fellows will be able to accurately describe indications for LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) use, operative techniques for implantation therapy. To ensure completion of these goals the trainee will work side-by- side with our heart failure surgeons. The fellows will be able to successfully and thoroughly present potential patients to the Medical Review Board for transplant and LVAD review board for approval as well present patients at the regularly scheduled transplant mortality and morbidity conference.

The candidates for this fellowship are required to have successfully completed at least four years of general surgery training from an accredited program in the USA or at least five years of general surgery training in a non-US accredited residency program as long as they are ECFMG certified.
