Karen J. Vigil, MD, professor, received her medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Henry Ford Hospital (Michigan) and was the recipient of the Outstanding Resident Award. She performed her Infectious Disease Fellowship and Advanced Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School, where she was elected Chief Fellow. Additionally, she received an extra year of training as an HIV Medicine Fellow before joining the Division of Infectious Diseases as a faculty member in October 2010. Dr. Vigil’s main areas of interest are focused on quality improvement and clinical and translational research in HIV.
She is currently the Associate Medical Director at Thomas Street, Quentin Mease Health Center, the Medical Director for HIV care services at LBJ Hospital, and the Division of Infectious Diseases Quality Improvement Officer. She is a co-investigator of the Houston Advancing Research Team for the ACTG Network. Her research focuses on HIV prevention and treatment, HIV related comorbidities and coinfections, sexually transmitted infections, and viral hepatitis, aiming to advance knowledge and improve health outcomes.
