Karen J. Vigil, MD, associate professor, received her medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Henry Ford Hospital (Michigan) and was the recipient of the Outstanding Resident Award. She performed her Infectious Disease Fellowship and Advanced Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School, where she was elected Chief Fellow. Additionally, she received an additional year of training as an HIV Medicine Fellow before joining the Division of Infectious Diseases as faculty in October, 2010. Dr. Vigil’s main areas of interest are focused on quality improvement and clinical and translational research in HIV/AIDS.
She is currently the Associate Medical Director of Thomas Street Health Center, the Medical Director of Infection Prevention for UT Physicians’ outpatient operations and the Division of Infectious Diseases Quality Officer. She is a coinvestigator of the Houston AIDS Research Team for the AIDS Clinical Trial Group network. Her current research projects include clinical studies in new antiretroviral drugs, HIV comorbidities and long-term complications of HIV and Hepatitis infection.
