Biography

Dr. Monica Patel, a native Houstonian, is a board-certified cardiologist and serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at UTHealth. Having completed her Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, she holds prestigious board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Echocardiography, and Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Patel’s distinguished practice encompasses esteemed institutions such as the Weatherhead PET Center, Memorial Hermann Hospital, and LBJ Hospital, where she consistently delivers exceptional patient care. Notably, Dr. Patel serves as the Assistant Director of P.E.T. Imaging and Training, collaborating with Dr. Gould, a pioneer in nuclear cardiology. Her expertise lies in interpreting cardiac PET scans, and she actively contributes to the groundbreaking Century Study. This pivotal research compares standard cardiac treatment with a proactive approach, integrating PET scans and lifestyle modifications. Dr. Patel’s insights have been invaluable, as evidenced by her co-authorship of several publications on coronary physiology and cardiac PET imaging.

With extensive expertise in cardiovascular imaging and specialized Level III training in echocardiography, she skillfully interprets transthoracic echocardiograms, performs transesophageal echocardiograms, and conducts stress echocardiograms. Furthermore, she demonstrates a comprehensive interpretation of nuclear SPECT studies and vascular ultrasounds.

As the program director of the cardiology fellowship program, she leads with expertise and dedication, supervising the training and growth of 35 cardiology fellows, establishing it as one of the largest and most highly regarded programs worldwide. Her exceptional commitment to teaching and mentorship has garnered her the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award, an accolade she has received for six consecutive years.
