Biography

Dr. Faraz Bishehsari, MD, PhD, earned his medical degree from Tehran University and a PhD in molecular oncology from Italy’s Gabriele D’Annunzio University. He furthered his clinical training with an internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh and a gastroenterology-hepatology fellowship at Northwestern University. He joined McGovern Medical School in June 2024 as the director of the Gastroenterology Research Center (GRC) in the Department of Internal Medicine at McGovern Medical School. He moved from Rush University, where he served as Professor of Medicine, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical Director of the High-Risk Clinic for Gastrointestinal Cancers, and Associate Director of the Center for Integrated Microbiome and Chronobiology Research. Dr. Bishehsari brings extensive expertise in gastroenterology, cancer biology, microbiome science, and chronobiology. He has secured continuous fundings from the NIH, including the prestigious NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award supporting the development of precision medicine approaches for pancreatic cancer through the study of tumor-specific circadian profiles. The GRC utilizes advanced patient-derived organoids, organ-chip technologies, and human biospecimens to model disease and evaluate novel therapeutics. Through multidisciplinary collaboration and innovative technologies, the center is poised to become a leading hub for digestive disease research, precision medicine, and the development of next-generation treatments that improve patient outcomes.
