Absalon D. Gutierrez, MD

Biography

Dr. Gutierrez joined the Division in 2012. He received his undergraduate education from the University of New Mexico, and his medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and a fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine/MD Anderson Cancer Center Joint Program. He is board-certified in both specialties. He is the Principal Investigator on NIH grants which examine the pharmacogenetics of the response to GLP-1 medications in Mexican-Americans with prediabetes and on the effects of GLP-1 medications on IL-6 signaling and adipose tissue metabolism. His primary clinical interests are in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and calcium disorders.
