Dr. Carissa Huq is an internist at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School where she practices as an attending and clinician educator on the internal medicine wards at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital. She serves as Associate Program Director for the internal medicine residency program, as well as Director for the Leadership in Medicine track for the residency.
Dr. Huq graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a year of service as an AmeriCorps volunteer. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at UTHealth Houston, graduating in 2020 with distinction for completion of the Leadership in Medicine track. Dr. Huq was honored with the Monica Monet Holloway Barrett Award, awarded to a graduating resident who exemplifies excellent patient care, service to her community, professionalism, kindness of spirit, and going above and beyond for patients. She was then selected to complete a chief residency year at UTHealth Houston, guiding the residency through the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. She joined the faculty in the Division of General Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 2021 and is board certified in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Huq has been involved in both UME and GME education since her residency. Her teaching philosophy focuses on encouraging learners in the pursuit of excellence through tenacity, a spirit of inquiry, and continual improvement. She is passionate about teaching bedside medicine, clinical reasoning, and health equity. Through her work for the Leadership in Medicine track, Dr. Huq cultivates leadership qualities in residents with mentorship.
Dr. Huq is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She has been honored with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for the last 5 years. She has been recognized by Harris Health as a Physician Champion for excellence in patient care.
Dr. Huq is passionate about providing empathic, patient-centered care for underserved populations, encouraging clinical excellence in trainees, and serving her community. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hosting, and going on park outings with her family.
