Biography

Dr. Francisco Fuentes joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in 1978. He earned his medical degree from The University of Valencia and completed his residency at The Hospital Santa Cruz & San Pablo in Barcelona, Spain and at the Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey.  He completed his fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Fuentes is the Theodore & Maureen O’Driscoll-Levy Professor, is Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and is the Program Director for the Innovations in Cardiovascular Disease Training Program, underscoring his excellence as a clinician and educator.

Dr. Fuentes is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Fuentes is also a recognized health educator in the community, and routinely volunteers at the San Jose Clinic. He received the Herbert L. and Margaret W. DuPont Master Clinical Teaching Award. He was named Texas Super Doctor by Texas Monthly and Top Doctors for Women—Cardiology by H. Texas Magazine, and was presented with a Special Congressional Recognition by Congressman Al Green in Honor of Outstanding Dedication to Healthcare, Education and Community Service. He also was honored by The American Heart Association for numerous contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine and the Hispanic community. He received the Benjy F. Brooks M.D. Award from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth for outstanding clinical faculty, and received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2016.

Areas of Interest

Clinical Interests

His clinical interests are general cardiology, preventive cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiovascular innovations in medicine. He conducts one of the largest and most comprehensive courses in preventive cardiology in the United States, which has been held annually for over 32 years.

Research Interests

Currently he is investigating how to optimize medical and surgical therapies for patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention.
