Dr. Emily Tharp is a board-certified neurologist with advanced fellowship training in movement disorders. She specializes in the medical and surgical management of Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders.
Dr. Tharp graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in Spanish, having studied abroad in Buenos Aires. She earned her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago, followed by residency training in neurology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She completed fellowship training as the first recipient of the Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders at UTHealth Houston, one of eight international academic centers chosen by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to provide a neurologist with two years of additional training and expertise in diagnosing and treating Parkinson’s and related diseases. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Tharp’s research interests include risk factors for the development of and novel therapeutics for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. She has worked as a sub-investigator on clinical trials of new treatments for Parkinson’s disease and in observational studies of Huntington’s disease. She is an author of peer-reviewed articles on Parkinson’s disease and deep brain stimulation. Dr. Tharp has presented nationally and internationally.
