Postdoctoral Fellow Positions

The BRAINS (Brain, Rejuvenation, Aging, Inflammation, Neurodegeneration, and Stroke) Research Laboratory at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Houston is one of the largest Neuroscience research groups worldwide that consists of 13 well-established PIs. We study molecular/genetic mechanisms underlying various CNS disorders, including Stroke, Atrial fibrillation, Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, Vascular dementia, BBB disruption, Alzheimer’s Disease, etc. This multidisciplinary research group provides tremendous training opportunities and resources to postdoctoral fellows that aim at independent faculty-level career development. The UTHealth BRAINS research laboratories and the Graduate Program in Neuroscience form a vibrant research community with access to considerable existing infrastructure, core facilities, and specialized equipment.


Cerebrovascular Imaging in Neurodegenerative Diseases

The Urayama Lab is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Scientist to join a dynamic research team focused on the function of the blood-brain barrier in both normal brains as well as models of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and neurodegenerative lysosomal storage. Current projects are developed around intravital two-photon microscopy imaging of cerebrovasculature in brain aging and neurodegeneration. Future work includes the integration of vascular mechanosensing and neuroimmunology with cytokine/chemokine stimulations in aging and disease progression. This position is an NIH Research grant-funded position. The laboratory is fully equipped with a custom-built two-photon laser-scanning microscope with imaging and stimulation laser lines and primary cell culture equipment.

Applicants should have experience in quantitative optical methods in vivo and in vitro, contemporary molecular/biochemical analyses, neuroimmunology and/or behavioral neuroscience. Basic Mechanisms of Stroke Recovery

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Venna Lab at UTHealth Houston. The Venna Lab investigates the mechanisms to enhance stroke recovery. This position involves studies focusing on the interplay between post-stroke depression and chronic recovery, and offers a unique opportunity to interact with several principal investigators, post-docs, and students working in the BRAINS lab. In addition to in-lab training, postdocs can benefit from the supplemental certificate training program offered by the UTHealth Office of Postdoctoral Affairs on responsible conduct in research, presentation, and teaching skills for career development.

We are seeking a highly self-motivated individual with a recent Ph.D. in Neuroscience / Immunology/Pharmacology/Biomedical Sciences and related publications. Applicants with experience in handling lab mice, behavioral testing in rodent models, molecular and cellular techniques, such as flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, PCR and RNA work, are preferred. Skills in data analysis, bioinformatics, and good writing skills would be desirable. Candidate is expected to be collaborative and have good verbal and written communication skills.

Mechanisms Underlying Cardioembolic Strokes and Vascular Dementia

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Manwani Lab at UTHealth in Houston. This current position will focus on identifying sex differences in cardio-embolism (study of atrial fibrillation) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Experience in mouse handling, minor surgeries like subcutaneous implants, animal cognitive behavior testing, flow cytometry, ELISA is preferred. State of the art, brain 7T MRI imaging and RNA sequencing will be utilized in this project and part of the postdoctoral training.

The ideal candidate will be a recent PhD with a strong publication record and experience in above techniques. Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience and based on the prevailing wage of postdoctoral research trainees set by the U.S. Department of Labor. Microglial Interferon Signaling in Aging and Stroke

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available to study on microglial inflammation in aged brains and following stroke in the Kim Lab in the Department of Neurology at UTHealth. This is a NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow position. The laboratory focuses on how interferon signaling drives neuroinflammation in aged brains and post-stroke brains, which could cause blood brain barrier disruption. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting animal surgery and utilizing FACS and bioinformatics techniques to analyze data in research projects focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular disease progression and neuroinflammation following stroke.

The ideal candidate will be a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Immunology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or related discipline) with expertise in animal surgery techniques, including aseptic technique and surgical instrumentation. We offer a competitive salary in accordance with UTHSC and NIH guidelines, as well as a benefits package, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment. The initial term of the position is one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.

Sex-Specific Mechanisms Involved in Ischemic Stroke

The Chauhan Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow. The lab focuses on understanding the sex-specific mechanisms involved in ischemic stroke with the aim to facilitate sex-specific drug discovery. The ideal candidate will join a dynamic, fast-paced group, and study the role of endogenous signaling molecules including, immune cells, and non-immune cells in our translational stroke models.

Candidate must be a PhD, MD, or the equivalent education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. Some experience in surgery, and skills in bioinformatic analyses of large-scale/big data (RNA sequencing) would be an advantage.

Non-Conventional DNA and RNA Structures in Aging and Age-Associated Brain Diseases

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Tsvetkov Lab to study study how non-conventional DNA and RNA structures (e.g., G-quadruplexes, i-motifs, etc) regulate brain aging and age-associated brain diseases. To study these structures, we use multiple approaches, including molecular, cell, and chemical biology and microscopy techniques.

We are looking for motivated and recent PhD graduates with experience in primary culturing, cell imaging, and mouse models. Candidates with a strong cell and molecular biology background are encouraged to apply.

Integrative Omics Research and Artificial Intelligence

A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Bioinformatics/Biostatistics Laboratory Core of the BRAINS Lab. This position will mainly focus on developing and/or applying computational pipelines/machine learning methods for integrative omics data analyses in various CNS-related diseases, at both the bulk and single-cell level.

We are looking for a recent PhD graduate with 3 or more years of coding experience with R/Python and strong background in computational biology and artificial intelligence applications.
