Dr. Anjail Sharrief-Ibrahim, MD, MPH, FAHA, FANA, is a board-certified neurologist, Tenured Professor of Neurology, and Director of the Stroke Prevention & Community Brain Health Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is a nationally recognized leader in stroke prevention and brain health disparities whose clinical practice, research, and community engagement efforts focus on improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by stroke and other neurological conditions.
In 2014, Dr. Sharrief-Ibrahim founded the Stroke Transitions Education and Prevention (STEP) Clinic, an innovative program designed to improve continuity of care and secondary prevention for stroke survivors transitioning from hospital to home. She serves as Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Community Brain Health Collaborative, which improves access to brain health research for Houston’s communities. She also founded the BEACON (Brain Health Education Access and Community Outreach Network) initiative to expand access to brain health education, care navigation, and preventive services in underserved communities.
As an NIH-funded investigator, Dr. Sharrief-Ibrahim leads multiple clinical trials focused on reducing disparities in stroke outcomes and improving long-term recovery through innovative healthcare delivery models. Her research includes the VIRTUAL trial, which leverages telemedicine, remote monitoring, and multidisciplinary care to improve blood pressure control and reduce the risk of recurrent stroke.
Dr. Sharrief-Ibrahim served as Vice Chair of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Guideline for the Primary Prevention of Stroke and has contributed to numerous national scientific statements and guideline development efforts. She is passionate about translating research into practice, mentoring the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and partnering with communities to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to achieve optimal brain health.
