Dr. Samden Lhatoo treats patients ages 16 years and older with newly diagnosed or complex cases of refractory epilepsy requiring surgery or for medical control of seizures. He is director of the Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (TCEP), which is certified as a Level 4 center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. He is also co-director of the Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies (TIRN).

Dr. Lhatoo obtained his membership of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1995.

He trained in neurology at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, England, Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in Queen Square in London.

Board certified in neurology in the United Kingdom in 2002, Dr. Lhatoo trained in epilepsy with a two-year fellowship at NHNN before completing an epilepsy research fellowship in EEG at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Before joining McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, where he serves as executive vice chair of the Department of Neurology, he earned an MBA from the Cleveland Clinic Weatherhead Executive MBA Program and was a member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Lhatoo sees patients at UTHealth Neurosciences-Neurology. His career goal is to improve the lives of people with epilepsy, and his research is focused on mortality in epilepsy, epilepsy surgery outcomes, and the use of new digital technologies in epilepsy.

Collaboration with Referring Physicians

Physicians affiliated with UTHealth Neurosciences engage referring physicians in the care of their patients, keeping them informed about patient progress throughout the evaluation and treatment process. After a patient’s treatment, referring physicians receive a summary and a plan for follow-up.
