Adult Genetic Epilepsy Clinic

Epilepsy and Genetic Testing

With more than 1,000 genes now associated with epilepsy, genetic information can play a critical role in guiding medical management, refining prognosis, and identifying opportunities for precision-based treatments.

The UTHealth Houston Neurosciences Adult Genetic Epilepsy Clinic provides specialized care for adults with confirmed genetic epilepsy or a strong clinical suspicion for a genetic etiology.

While many genetic epilepsy programs focus primarily on pediatric patients, a growing number of adults continue to live with genetic epilepsy and require specialized, lifelong care. Our clinic addresses this gap by providing coordinated access to epileptologists and genetic counselors with expertise in adult genetic epilepsy.

Housed within the Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, a Level 4 National Association of Epilepsy Center, we offer comprehensive evaluations – including genetic testing when appropriate – with care provided by experienced epileptologists and genetic counselors who specialize in epilepsy and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Our team carefully reviews genetic results and explains what they mean for you and your care.

What to Expect for Your Visit

  • Comprehensive epilepsy evaluation: You will meet with an experienced epileptologist to review your epilepsy history, discuss your current symptoms, and talk through personalized treatment and management options.
  • Genetic counseling support: You will meet with a genetic counselor who will either review and clearly explain existing genetic test results or, if genetic testing has not yet been completed, talk with you about testing options and help coordinate testing when appropriate.
  • Coordinated care referrals: When needed, we can connect you with other specialists to address additional medical or psychosocial needs.
  • Research and clinical trials: Patients may have opportunities to participate in research studies or clinical trials aimed at improving understanding and treatment of genetic epilepsies, when available.
