Dr. Akshay Sharma is fellowship-trained in pediatric neurosurgery with special expertise in epilepsy surgery and stereotactic and functional neurosurgical techniques.
Dr. Sharma received his undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University and his medical degree with honors distinction in research at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed neurosurgery residency training at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by fellowship training in epilepsy surgery at the same institution. He went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
During training, he received numerous honors and awards, most recently the 2025 KCK Compassionate and Humanistic Care Award from Case Western Reserve University, the 2024 Innovator Partnership Award from the Cleveland School of Science and Medicine of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the 2024 Wylie Pediatric Epilepsy Research Award from the Cleveland Clinic Department of Pediatric Neurology; and the 2023-24 Resident Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and 2019 Cash Award for Clinical Research from the Cleveland Clinic.
His work establishing a high school pipeline and mentorship program in Cleveland, “Brainstormers,” has been recognized and supported by the 2024 Alfred and Norma Stoller Award for Virtue-Based Leadership, the 2022 William and Roxana Michener Award, and the 2022 Shattuck Hartwell Memorial Award, as well as grants from the Cleveland Clinic Education Institute and the Caregiver Catalyst Program.
Dr. Sharma’s research focuses on three main areas: uncovering the patient-specific factors that lead to the best outcomes after epilepsy surgery, discovering new neuromodulation targets for treating epilepsy and pediatric movement disorders, and mapping the electrical networks in the developing brain that support fundamental social and emotional processes, such as language, attention, and perception. His research has been presented nationally and internationally and has been published in Neurosurgery, Operative Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Video Journal of Education and Pedagogy, Journal of Neuro-Oncology, Epilepsy and Behavior Reports, Child’s Nervous System, Epilepsia, and World Neurosurgery, among other peer-reviewed publications.
He is a Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Epilepsy Society, Society for Neuroscience, and the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.
Collaboration with Referring Physicians
Physicians at UTHealth Houston Neurosciences engage referring physicians in the care of their patients, keeping them informed about patient progress throughout the evaluation and treatment process. After a patient’s treatment, referring physicians receive a summary and a plan for follow-up.
