Exercise and Your Brain

How Does Exercise Benefit the Brain?
Some health experts say that exercising regularly is one of the most transformative steps a person can take to improve their health. The benefits extend to the brain in several valuable ways, including both direct and indirect benefits.
Exercise increases blood flow and releases endorphins that can strengthen concentration, increase mental sharpness, stimulate brain cell growth, and protect against age-related decline. Exercise can reduce both inflammation and insulin resistance. People who exercise also usually sleep better and have reduced stress levels.
How Often and What Type of Exercise Should I Do?
To gain these benefits, experts recommend people exercise at least 30 minutes a day five days a week. But, any amount of exercise is beneficial, and it’s OK to start with a few minutes a day and increase over time. Some studies show that aerobic exercise has the unique benefit of increasing the size of the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for learning and verbal recall. Research shows that those volume increases may occur after at least six months of a moderate exercise program. Six months of exercise is also shown to improve thinking and memory among those already in cognitive decline.
Experts recommend developing an exercise plan that you can maintain, no matter what time of the day you fit it in. Exercising in the morning seems to spike brain activity, increases retention of new information, and improves reactions to complex situations throughout the day.
How Can I Stay Motivated?
Consider exercising with a friend or relative. This will boost accountability and also provide the added brain benefits of social interaction. If possible, hire a personal trainer to help keep you accountable and motivated. Keep a journal or an app to track your activity. Treat exercise the same as you would an important prescription medication. Both improve quality of life. As with all health decisions, discuss your exercise regimen with your doctor. They will support and advise you on your progress.
