Choi and Yang Receive Niekro Aneurysm & AVM Foundation Grant

H. Alex Choi, MD, professor in the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School, and Seong Kyu Yang, MD, MS, MPH, a postdoctoral fellow, have received funding from the Niekro Aneurysm & AVM Foundation for a promising research project at the medical school.

Their study, “Identifying Pathophysiologic Targets of Cerebral Edema After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Using Multi-Omic Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid,” aims to uncover new insights into the causes and treatment of brain swelling following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

“Cerebral edema is a significant complication following subarachnoid hemorrhage that can worsen patient outcomes,” says Choi, who is executive director of the UTHealth Houston Novel Treatments for Acute Brain Injury Institute at UTHealth Houston and director of the UTHealth Houston Neurosciences Neurocritical Care Program. “By identifying specific biological targets in cerebrospinal fluid through multi-omic analysis, we can move toward effective treatments that will help improve outcomes for the thousands affected by ruptured aneurysms each year.”
